Samuel R. Delany delivered the 2012-2013 James Robert Brudner '83 Memorial Prize Lectures at Yale on October 17th and at the Midtown Executive Club at Club Quarters Midtown in New York City on October 18th. Delany is a professor of English and creative writing at Temple University, an accomplished novelist, and an influential queer critic and mentor to the next generation of queer studies scholars.  He is a winner of multiple Nebula and Hugo Awards, an inductee into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and recipient of the William Whitehead Memorial Award for lifetime achievement.  His books Times Square Red, Times Square Blue, which analyzes the impact of Times Square’s redevelopment on working-class queer sexual culture, and The Motion of Light in Water, a memoir of his life as a black and gay writer, are regularly taught at Yale and across the country.  He was recently the subject of a documentary, The Polymath: The Life and Opinions of Samuel R. Delany, Gentleman, which was screened at Yale prior to the lectures with a Q&A after with director Fred Barney Taylor.

His talks "A View from the Valley’s Edge" and “Another View from the Valley’s Edge” were enthusiastically received both on campus and in New York—the titles referencing his most recent novel, Through the Valley of the Nest of Spiders. His two talks broached topics of sex, sexuality, and race with thoughtfulness and frankness.  Interweaving stories from his life with discussions of theory, Delany captured the attention of both audiences.  For more information about the Brudner Award and a list of past recipients, visit http://lgbts.yale.edu/brudner.
